Success of the Mashariki African Film Festival 2025: Empowering Young Filmmakers
Kigali, Rwanda – The Mashariki African Film Festival (MAAFF) 2025 concluded with a resounding success, showcasing the vibrant talent of emerging filmmakers across East Africa. This year’s festival, held from November 22 to November 29, featured a series of impactful workshops aimed at enhancing the skills of young creatives in the region. In collaboration with esteemed partners including the British Council, The Education University of Hong Kong, Afrika Eye Film Festival (UK), Buni Media (Kenya), and Ona Stories (Tanzania), MAAFF provided participants with hands-on training in innovative storytelling techniques, including animation and virtual reality (VR).
Partial funding for this project has been provided by a Faculty Development Fund project from the Faculty of Humanities at the Education University of Hong Kong, titled ‘Pedagogies of Care in Transnational Contexts’
Workshops Overview
The festival hosted two major workshops: Animating African Histories and VR Storytelling Training.
Animating African Histories Workshop
Facilitated by Buni Media, this workshop introduced participants to whiteboard animation skills, enabling them to create compelling narratives rooted in African history. Over 30 students from East Africa University of Rwanda and the University of Kigali engaged in practical sessions, learning to utilize accessible tools like Canva and Doodly. Participants produced short animations that highlighted significant historical figures and events, fostering a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage.
VR Storytelling Training
Led by Ona Stories, supported by the Education University of Hong Kong, the VR workshop equipped 50 students with essential skills in immersive storytelling through 360° video production. Participants explored the potential of VR to document African experiences and engage audiences in new ways. The training included practical exercises, allowing students to shoot, edit, and produce their own VR content, culminating in a masterclass that showcased the impact of immersive technologies in storytelling.
Impact and Community Engagement
The workshops not only improved technical skills but also fostered collaboration among young filmmakers, enhancing their confidence and creativity. Participants reported a significant increase in their ability to tell stories using modern techniques, with many expressing a desire for more advanced training in the future.
The festival also featured outreach initiatives, including community screenings and discussions, which engaged local audiences and promoted cultural dialogue. The Roadshow events, held in various districts, further strengthened the connection between filmmakers and the communities they serve.
Looking Ahead
As the festival wraps up, the success of the workshops signals a promising future for East African cinema. By empowering young filmmakers with the tools and knowledge to tell their own stories, MAAFF is playing a crucial role in revitalizing the region’s film industry and preserving its rich cultural narratives.
The Mashariki African Film Festival continues to be a beacon of creativity and collaboration, paving the way for future generations of storytellers. With the support of international partners and a commitment to fostering local talent, the festival is set to inspire even greater achievements in the years to come.
