The 2026 Theme: REELS OF RESILIENCE

African cinema has always told the stories of women and men who face the world with courage — who resist unjust forms of oppression and build pathways toward the future of their people and their societies. Film has always had, and always will have, the power to inspire. To refuse forgetting. To give hope and motivation to those who resist, who build, who shape the Africa of today with resilience. A resilience that redefines African narratives that had been undermined by colonial history.

In doing so, the filmmakers and storytellers of African cinema embody a true A.I. — not Artificial Intelligence, but African Intelligence. An intelligence that demonstrates to the global film industry that there exist reels which speak to the present and draw the future; reels that offer an irreplaceable contribution to the world.

This is also the mission at the heart of the Mashariki Academy — now taking shape within the Mashariki ecosystem, alongside the Festival and the Market. To prepare and inspire the authors, directors, and experts of a resilient African cinema. Because the most powerful algorithm for change was never written in code. It was written in light, in image, and in story.
